Salt/Pepper, Table/Chair, List/Choice. Really, it is that simple and that clear. Whenever you make a list, you make a choice!
The first thing you learned as a facilitator was that the core behavior of innovation and creativity is to make a list of options and then make a choice.
It sounds so simple, and still, we all have made lists of ideas without making choices. Time gets away from us and suddenly people must leave the session. When you leave the room without making choices, the ideas have little chance of becoming reality.
You, as the facilitator, have the power to make sure all that great work isn't left to languish on a list without the checkmarks and action steps that would ensure something happens with all that innovation.
Here are a few tips to help you make sure choices are made:
-
Allow time for choices to be made. Break your session down by the amount of time each part will take, including decision-making.
-
Set the timer on your phone to sound a fun alarm when it's time to make choices. The rule of thumb is to allow at least 10 minutes for choices to be made.
-
At the end of the session, capture a couple of action steps for the client and agent to help the marketing project continue to move forward.
Remember: Making lists and making choices go together like Salt-N-Peppa!
